Geology
Level: AS and A Level

Board: WJEC

Method of assessment
The AS involves two theoretical exams and one practical exam and the A2 also involves coursework undertaken in the field.

Why choose this course?
There are many reasons, but here are a few that students mention: because you have an interest in the physical aspects of Geography but have not enjoyed human Geography; to complement other science subjects with a practical science which is more accessible to many; as a science subject when a science A Level is a requirement for a university course; because you are interested in a career in engineering; because you enjoy fossil collecting and want to know more; because you enjoy fieldwork and finally because you enjoy Geology and want to be a geologist as they are now the 2nd highest paid graduates on leaving university. If any of these reasons applies to you then consider studying Geology.

What will I study?
The first year is a total Geology Course looking at all the aspects of the subject from plate tectonics, volcanism and earthquakes to the understanding of the processes of rock formation and the use of fossils. You will also study rocks, fossils and minerals in the field and in -lab .

In A2 the course takes the concepts and knowledge of the first year and develops them further as well as allowing you to pursue optional areas of interest.

Huish Extra
We visit sites in Devon and Dorset in the first year and travel to Spain in the second year to do practical fieldwork. You can also go on the Geography trip to Sicily to supplement your experiences of geological wonder.
