People who have A level Maths tend to go on to earn higher salaries! Advanced Mathematics develops your ability to reason logically and understand the real world.Maths seems abstract, but you learn it in a very practical way – you don’t read it or listen to a lecture about it – you DO it. In some ways, learning maths is like learning to play a musical instrument. You need teaching and regular practice before you can perform proficiently, but you know when you are doing well. It can be a very satisfying subject to study.

What modules are covered?

AS Level
You will study three modules in your AS year. Core Maths 1 and Core Maths 2 are compulsory. The third module is a choice between Statistics and Mechanics.

Core Maths – developing GCSE algebra, graphs and trigonometry in an abstract and precise way and introducing calculus.

Mechanics – introducing the mathematics of forces and motion.

Statistics – representation of data, probability and bivariate data.

A2 Level
You will study four modules in your A2 year.

Core Maths 3 and Core Maths 4 – Calculus : differentiation and integration.

Functions - polynomial, logarithmic, exponential and trigonometrical.

Equations, including differential equations and vectors.

Decision Maths – algorithms, graphs, networks, linear programming.

At both AS and A2 Level: three equally weighted written examinations.

Minimum qualifications: Full level 2

Five grade C GCSEs including English Langage and a grade B in GCSE Mathematics. Students will also complete a bridging course covering basic algebraic techniques, which they will be required to show to a sufficient level.

Recommended books

The ‘OCR Advanced Mathematics’ series is recommended , but it is advisable to wait until the course has started before purchasing any books.

Other subjects you may choose to study

Maths combines well with any of the sciences, and also with Geography, Business Studies, Psychology and IT. Even if it seems unrelated, the logical nature of Mathematics will enrich any combination of subjects.

English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

What can I do after this course?

An extremely wide range of jobs, degrees and Higher National Diplomas in the fields of Science, Engineering, Medicine and Computing, and also in the Psychology, Languages, Social Science and Financial Sectors. You can study maths as a joint course with almost any other university option.

Fees

Course tuition fees are free for UK students under 19yrs.

All students may be charged for materials e.g. equipment, clothing etc.

UK students aged 19 and over will need to pay tuition fees as well as any materials, registration and exam fees.Some adults may be eligible for free tuition.Please contact us for more fee information.

The 24+ Advanced Learning Loan

If you are 24 or over at start of this course, you can apply for a new loan to cover the course fees. There are no repayments until the course is completed and you are earning £21000 or more. Therefore if you earn up to £21000 a year there’s nothing to pay back. If you earn £22000 a year your loan repayments would be as little as £7 per month. Call us for more information.
