We are all born with an urge to understand the world around us.  Physics leads to the answers to such questions as: ‘How does the sun keep shining?’, ‘What are the ultimate constituents of matter?’, ‘How did the universe begin and how will it end?’   As well as being concerned with these fundamental questions physics also forms the basis of most present and future technology.   If you enjoy applying your mind to solving problems with imagination and logical thinking then study physics.

What modules are covered?

Advanced GCE in Physics (9PH0)
The Advanced GCE in Physics consists of three externally examined papers and the Science Practical Endorsement.

Students must complete all assessment in May/June in any single year.

Paper 1: Advanced Physics I
Mechanics
Electric Circuits
Further Mechanics
Electric and Magnetic Fields
Nuclear and Particle Physics

Assessment: 1 hour 45 minutes (30% of the total qualification)

Paper 2: Advanced Physics II
Materials
Waves and Particle Nature of Light
Thermodynamics
Space Physics
Nuclear Radiation
Gravitational Fields
Oscillations

Paper 3: General and Practical Principles in Physics
Questions in this paper may draw on any of the topics in this specification.
The paper will include synoptic questions that may draw on two or more topics.
The paper will include questions that assess conceptual and theoretical
understanding of experimental methods (indirect practical skills) that will draw on
students’ experiences of the core practicals.

Assessment: 2 hours 30 minutes (40% of the total qualification)

Science Practical Endorsement
Internally assessed and externally moderated by Pearson Edexcel
This qualification will give students opportunities to use relevant apparatus and
techniques to develop and demonstrate specific practical skills. These skills will be
assessed through a minimum of 12 identified practical activities within each
qualification.
The assessment outcomes will be reported separately on students’ certificates as either
‘pass’ or ‘fail’. To achieve a pass, students must demonstrate that they are competent in
all of the practical skills listed in the subject content requirements for physics.

English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths.
