Why should I study Use of Mathematics?
What will I study?
Use of Mathematics is an AS Level qualification which offers a practical course in the use of maths to model and interpret real-life situations. It also provides mathematical support for other A Level studies if you are not studying A Level Maths.
You will study three units as outlined below:
Unit 1:
Working with Algebraic and Graphical Techniques
Using formulae including substitution and transposition, drawing and interpreting graphs.
Unit 2:
Using and Applying Decision Mathematics
Problem solving by simplifying situations, use of algorithms and graphs.
Unit 3:
Applying Mathematics
Modelling real-life situations using mathematical techniques learned throughout the course.
What skills do I need?
- IT skills would be useful particularly in the use of spreadsheets and graphing software.
- Ability to meet deadlines
What materials will I need to purchase?
Students are encouraged to consider purchasing a graphical calculator through college at the start of term.
How is the course assessed?
The first two units are assessed through coursework and a written examination, with each carrying equal weight. The final unit is assessed by means of a written examination only.
What will this course prepare me for?
It provides a valuable maths qualification if you are wishing to enter HE courses in a range of subjects from ICT and engineering to psychology. The practical nature of the course makes this a valuable qualification from both yours and an employers point of view.
Private Study
As an approximate guideline AS subjects require 3-4 hrs of independent study each; A2 subjects 4-5 hrs each and GCSE subjects 2 hrs each.
How will I be taught?
The subject will be taught using a variety of methods, including individual and group work, with extensive use of computers and graphical calculators.
