The AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting covers a range of complex accounting tasks, including maintaining cost accounting records and the preparation of reports and returns. Students will learn and master financial processes, including accounting principles and concepts, advanced bookkeeping, final accounts, VAT issues in business, management accounting costing techniques and ethical practices for accountants. This qualification further delivers software skills through spreadsheet training for accounting.

This qualification is a high-quality training programme designed to help you to become as effective as possible in your career and gain an internationally recognised qualification relating to your work. This level introduces more complex accounting tasks for Financial and Management Accounting following on from the Level 2 Certificate.

We have partnered with Mindful Education to deliver this course through our Online and On Campus model.

Our Online and On Campus approach enables students to benefit from both face-to-face teaching at the college and online lessons available on demand. This format offers a truly flexible study experience.

In addition to attending face-to-face classes, students will be expected to undertake 6 hours of additional study every week out of college.

About this course

This qualification is suitable for those looking to progress in their accounting and finance career. It is also for those who have been working in a finance role but to achieve formal recognition of their skills.

A sound knowledge of book keeping principles will be expected at Level 3, or the achievement of AAT Level 2 or equivalent. Those students not possessing AAT Level 2 must discuss entry requirements with the course tutor.

Advanced Bookkeeping

on this unit you will learn about non-current assets; extending the trial balance; accruals and pre-payments; irrecoverable and doubtful debts; and inventory valuation.

Final Accounts Preparation

on this unit you will learn about incomplete records; partnership accounting; changing partnerships; and different types of organisations.

Management Accounting

Costing: on this unit you will learn about overheads; costing methods; inventory valuation and losses; budgeting; break even and limiting factors; and discounted cash flows.

Indirect Tax

on this unit you will learn about value added tax (VAT); submitting returns; sanctions and penalties; and using the accounting system to extract relevant data for VAT returns.

Ethics for Accountants

on this unit you will learn about the ethical code for accountants as exemplified in the AAT Code of Professional Ethics and its contents. This unit is assessed within the synoptic assessment only.

Spreadsheets for Accounting

on this unit you will learn skills to analyse data; using formulas, functions, data analysis tools, sorting and filtering; checking data; and presenting data using a range of methods. This unit is assessed within the synoptic assessment only.

All of the units within the Advanced Diploma in Accounting qualification are mandatory. Four units are assessed individually in end-of-unit assessments (computer-based exams), but this qualification also includes a synoptic assessment, sat towards the end of the qualification, which draws on and assesses knowledge and understanding from across the qualification.
