Delegates should have some working knowledge of Windows or should have completed the Introduction to Windows course. Delegates should feel at ease performing tasks such as arranging, sizing and switching between Windows. Previous use of a mouse is assumed on this course.

Objectives

- Create, save and open existing databases on their systems.
- Understand the principles around database design and why it is important to plan and prepare your database before entering any information.
- Explain the advantages of using different data types within their database to change the way data can be input.
- Create a form (on the pc) for users to enter data more easily.
- Access information from the database by creating and saving queries within their database.
- Produce accurate and informative as well as nicely presented formal reports for presentation purposes.

- What is a relational database?
- Creating a database using the Database Wizards
Tables
- Creating a single table database
- Using data types, field properties, validation rules, captions, default values, fields required, field size, zero length and input masks using the wizard
- Primary keys
- Creating a multi-table database (relational database)
- Creating links between tables
- Working with referential integrity
- Preventing data in one table being deleted when it has links to data in another table
- Viewing and editing related data in a sub datasheet

- Using queries in a database
- Extracting information from a database using queries
- Creating a query from single and multiple tables
- Sorting the results of a query
- Hiding fields in a query
