Department: University Access

Short Description: This programme prepares mature students to apply for entry to Higher Education courses such as Social Work, Law and Social Science Degrees.

Where will it take me? This course offers mature students an accelerated route into Higher Education through a choice of pathways of study, and provides you with a recognised academic qualification.

Those who meet the entry requirements, which vary depending on the course applied for, will be accepted for a place on a Degree course at Queen's University Belfast or another relevant institute. It should be noted that the Skills module (Numeracy and Communications) in this course is NOT an equivalent to GCSE Maths and/or English Language. You are advised to enrol on a GCSE Maths and/or English course if you need these qualifications to progress.

Previous successful students have progressed to Degrees in the following areas:
  • Teacher Training
  • Law, Business
  • Social Work
  • Nursing
  • Occupational Therapy
  • ICT
  • Youth and Community
  • Environmental Planning
  • Communications
  • Advertising and Marketing
  • Psychology
  • History
  • Sociology
  • English
  • Social Anthropology and Archaeology
  • Radiography
  • Physiotherapy

What's it all about? You will pursue 6 modules of study, 5 of which are 'academic'.

You will also study a 'Skills' module which includes:
  • Communcations
  • Numeracy
  • Information Technology (Key Skills Level 2)
  • Study Skills

You will have access to careers guidance and help in applying for Higher Education courses through a weekly tutorial session.

You will choose between 3 pathways of study.

Social and Biological Science Pathway: Sociology, Biology and English Literature - this prepares students for courses such as Nursing, Social Work, Health and Caring.

How will I be assessed? You will be assessed by means of both coursework (40%) and end of module/year examinations (60%).

Why choose us? This course is particularly suitable for adults returning to education as classes are mainly held in the morning. You may be able to gain an IT qualification or sit a GCSE Maths or English Language qualification.
