About this course

Continual assessment and a portfolio of evidence at the end of the course. Level 2 ICT, Numeracy and Literacy qualifications will be externally examined. There will be some internal tests at exams.

The course leads to Higher Education. There are three pathways.

Social Sciences Pathway – For learners who want to go into Social Work, Social Care or study towards a Social Sciences degree.

Healthcare Pathway – For learners who want to pursue a career in Nursing, Midwifery and other health related professions.

Humanities Pathway – This is for learners who are interested in a teaching career or a Humanities degree.


The Access Diploma is a nationally recognised qualification for adults who aspire to go to university. It is an intense one year programme which will ensure the learner gains study skills, ICT skills and Level 2 numeracy and literacy skills to enable them to cope with a higher education environment. The course has three pathways.

Social Sciences Pathway – For learners who want to go into Social Work, Social Care or study towards a Social Sciences degree.

Healthcare Pathway – For learners who want to pursue a career in Nursing, Midwifery and other health related professions.

Humanities Pathway – This is for learners who are interested in a teaching career or a Humanities Degree.

Each pathway has core units like study skills, ICT and Applying for University. In addition units in the following disciplines are covered: Human Biology, Psychology, Sociology, Law, History, English Literature, Maths and English Language.
