Course suitability

Access courses are designed to prepare students for a particular university degree course, for example Business and some provide a more general preparation for university study, allowing a choice of a range of different subjects on offer. Access courses generally include a number of academic subjects relevant to your intended degree course plus a compulsory core element including numeracy, literacy, IT and communication skills, which will provide the essentials needed for successful study at university. Subject specialisms include:- IT, Business, Law, Sociology, Psychology and English Literature

The Access to HE Diploma is ideal for students who are returning to study after a break and have gained life and work experiences relevant to their chosen study area. We particularly welcome applications from students who may have completed secondary education some years ago and who may or may not have formal qualifications. Our Access courses are specially designed to help you return to the world of learning by building the skills and confidence necessary for success in Higher Education and future career progression. There are no formal entry requirements other than you need the ability to complete the course in one year if you attend full-time or over two years if you attend part-time. Each applicant will have an interview with one of the course leaders.

Information about the course

Access to HE courses are specially designed for entry into Higher Education and provide the underpinning knowledge and skills needed to progress to a degree course at university or college.

These courses enable students who do not have the level 2 and 3 qualifications of O levels, GCSEs and A Levels/AGNVQs, needed to progress to Higher Education; to acquire the Access to HE qualification, which is equivalent in standard to these qualifications.

Course content

All students study core subjects including Maths, Communications and IT. In addition to a tutorial programme which cover study skills, students also study specialist subjects according to their chosen pathway.

Assessment

The course is assessed partly by continuous assessment based on essay and other assignments and partly through compulsory credits in research skill and examinations. In order to complete the course, students will need to produce a portfolio of assessed work.

A student needs to gain 60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3 plus 15 credits at Level 2 to achieve the Open College Network accredited Access Diploma, by the end of the course.
