The course provides foundation knowledge and an exemplary experience of laboratory practical work in addition to equipping students with the skills necessary to succeed at university. It is a one year full time programme taught over 2 semesters, which is respected ad recognized by universities as a preparation for entry to a wide range of degree courses, as an alternative to A levels.

Course programme

To achieve the Level 3 diploma in Science you will study a total of 60 credits over a single academic year. All students must study academic skills (the toolkit needed for success at university) in addition to a choice of 2 subjects from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. All units are class based and learning is facilitated by formal lectures, practical group work and ICT interaction. The course develops crucial academic skills (such as scientific writing, time management, research and referencing) in addition to delivering a sound knowledge and understanding to enable you to progress to University to be successful in the professional career of your choice. Academic skills units are assessed on coursework. Units in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics are assessed by a mixture of coursework and formal examinations in preparation for university degree courses. All work is internally moderated and externally moderated by assessors from the awarding body Certa. The Access to HE Science diploma is widely accepted by universities for entry to a variety of degree programmes. If you are aged 19 or over and considering enrolling on a further education course at Level 3 or above, you may be entitled to an Advanced Learner Loan to help with course fees.
