Information about the course

The Access to social work course is specially designed to enable its students to enter for a degree or diploma in social work at university. It provides the underpinning skills to enable students to return to the world of learning by building the skills and confidence necessary for success in Higher Education and future career progression. Our approach allows students to become independent learners so that they can fully appreciate the opportunities of a university education.

Course content

All students study core subjects including maths, communications and IT. Where required the opportunity to achieve a GCSE equivalence in maths and english is also available. The course includes a tutorial programme that includes the necessary skills to enable students to complete the course with confidence and to take full advantage of the return to education. The specialist subjects include social studies, psychology, social work values and social policy.

Assessment

The course is assessed partly by continuous assessment based on essay and other
assignments and partly through compulsory credits in research skill and examinations. In order to complete the course, students will need to produce a portfolio of assessed work.

A student needs to gain 60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3 plus 15 credits at Level 2 to achieve the Open College Network accredited Access Diploma, by the end of the course.

Progression

This pathway is for people looking to enter social work, probation service and care professions. In addition students may prefer to follow a non-vocational degree e.g. criminology, psychology and social science. Learners will generally progress on to social work degree programmes.
