Access courses enable adults without qualifications such as A Levels to progress on to Higher Education. The Access to HE Diploma is widely recognised by UK universities and Colleges. Our Access courses will teach you how to approach study and the different learning techniques that you will need during your time at university.

In this pathway at Huntingdon Campus, you will study English Literature, History, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology as well as a compulsory Study Skills course. You will also be assigned a tutor at the start of the course. The tutor will closely monitor and track your progress and be able to help you reach your potential.

You are advised to apply for this course between November 2018 and June 2019.  Interviews start in February and this is a popular course.

Course programme

Many Access students feel they have not yet fully developed their potential and the programme offers them the chance to get to grips with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to succeed in Higher Education.

Learners who undertake this pathway will be able to apply for a wide variety of Humanities, Arts, Political and Social Science subjects at degree level. Specific examples of degrees include Journalism, Law, Philosophy, Sociology, History & Events Management. Students wishing to study business related or computing courses at university often take this Access pathway, although students should check with the Higher Education provider whether this pathway is acceptable for particular business degree courses.

We have an excellent track record of student progression into universities, including Cambridge.

Please note: you are normally required to have GCSE Maths grade C and GCSE English at C (or new grading 9-4 for GCSE Maths and English) or Level 2 Maths and English equivalent as a minimum before applying for this course. This is because most degree courses now require at least Level 2 Maths & English. Occasionally, exceptions are made for this pathway. This can be discussed at the Welcome Event.

If you need to resit GCSE Maths or English, alongside the Access programme, you will be required initially to complete a diagnostic test in English/Maths prior to the start of the course, to judge suitability.

Please research HE requirements very carefully. A STRONG COMMITMENT IS NEEDED AS THE COURSE IS VERY INTENSIVE.

Acceptance onto the Access programme is conditional on:

• A satisfactory reference
• Attending taster days: Monday 1st July to Wednesday 3rd July 2019 (3 days)
• Completing a research task over the summer

We want you to achieve to the very best of your ability at CRC. To make this happen we offer both learning and personal support by specialist staff tailored to meet your specific needs.

Assessment is by coursework. The Access diploma consists of 60 credits, 45 of which are graded. Credits are awarded through assessment at the end of or during each module. These assessments may be written such as essays / research projects; oral e.g. presentations and there may also be examinations.

This programme takes one year, starting at the beginning of September and finishing in late June the following year. In addition to timetabled classes, it is expected that students will complete at least 15 hours of further independent study per week.
