This two-week course provides an introduction to accessibility for translators. The first week focuses on subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing. Students will be shown how to use the Swift subtitling software, how to create, edit and time subtitles, and how to create subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, using industry guidelines. The second week focuses on audio description using the Adept software. Students will learn about the principles of audio description and complete practical assignments between the sessions. Each day begins with a three-hour interactive lecture during which students learn about subtitling and audio description. Students are then given a practical task which they complete in the afternoon using specialist software, and which is then discussed at the beginning of the following session. This two-week intensive course is taught entirely in English. Course programme

What will I learn?

Students will learn how to use the Swift and Adept software packages, and how to create, edit and time subtitles. They will learn about industry guidelines for SDH (subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing) and approaches to Audio Description, and how to create SDH files and audio description scripts. This is an introductory course and designed to combine theory input with practice. Students will need to bring a set of headphones to the sessions and a USB/2 key.

Teaching and Assessment

There is no formal assessment but students will receive informal feedback on their work during the sessions. They will receive a certificate of completion at the end of course.
