pg00002 EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME The Accounting and Finance award is designed to develop up-to-date, competent and adaptable graduates who will be sultable for a range of chosen professlons. Accordlngly, the aims are to: Encourage the development of a range of skills, both subject specific and more general employability skills, which will enhance career opportunities. Provide a stimulating and accesslble course of study that glves students a sound grasp of contemporary accounting and finance ¡ssues which the student can develop and apply ¡n their future employment. Develop students who have an awareness of flnanclal and buslness ¡ssues, and are wllllng and able to embrace change and are focused on achlevement. To provide students with an opportunity to undertake a year of work experience through the placement, with support from the Placements Office. The Staffordshire Gradúate attributes are ¡ntegrated ¡nto the programme of study. What is distinctive about this programme? This award covers both flnanclal and managerlal aspects of accounting. Students will galn an understanding of both the theory and practical appllcatlon of these disciplines during the award. It covers the ¡n-depth knowledge of the core áreas for those ¡ntendlng to move ¡nto the Accounting professlon. This programme of study beneflts from all that ¡s offered by the tradltlonal 3-year BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance award - ¡ts dlstlnctlveness lies ¡n ¡ts provisión as an accelerated route to the achlevement of an undergraduate award which ¡s professionally accredlted. In so dolng, ¡t facllltates an accelerated pathway to professional accountancy qualifications and career for hlghly motlvated students. In teaching block one and two, students study common modules to both the 3-year and 2-year Accounting and Finance awards. Adaptatlon of modules to a blended learning approach, ensure that teaching block three modules contaln the same learning outcomes contalned on the 3-year route. Whllst the course will be an ¡ntenslve experience for the students, ¡t ¡s acknowledged ¡n the report 'Accelerated Learning Programmes' (complled by Sheffleld Hallam University, commlssloned by the HEA on behalf of the Department for Education and Skills and the Higher Education Fundlng Councll for England, May 2007) that: "Some research suggests that learners retaln knowledge better wlthout long gaps between study and appllcatlon of knowledge . ¡ntenslve learning can offer retentlon beneflts for all students: longer, more Intense sessions can stlmulate deeper understanding, and ¡n student surveys ¡t was found especlally beneflclal for higher order learning."
