Why choose this course? This degree, which is accredited by the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, involves the study of acupuncture from a Chinese medical approach and includes the principles of yin and yang, zang fu organs, qi, eight principle approach to diagnostics and their application to practice. Chinese philosophy is based upon holism, treating the mind and body as a whole, with the prime objective of treatment to enable the client to regain new balance and return to a state of wellbeing.



As well as developing an understanding of Chinese philosophy, you will also acquire knowledge of anatomical studies, research and therapeutic skills as well as developing your skills in communication, presentation, reflection, information gathering, problem-solving and evaluation.



An onsite clinic offering treatments to the general public, staff and students presents an ideal opportunity to gain experience in a rich learning environment, under the supervision of tutors.   You can also choose to study this course as a foundation year BA (Hons) Acupunture (4 years including foundation year) UCAS code:32K2    *Please note the foundation year of this course is only available for 2017 entry.

Course programme

  • You will be eligible to join the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ATCM) as a student member. Once qualified, you must inform the ATCM of your change of status from student to practitioner.
  • It covers a range of therapeutic skills including acupuncture, cupping, moxibusition and tui na.
  • Includes a module dedicated to therapeutic interventions for musculoskeletal interventions.
  • You will have the opportunity to study Eastern and Western approaches to health in depth and work with experienced practitioners.
  • All clinical experience is provided at the campus clinic. The eight bed clinic is available to the general public and provides students with the experienced required to become a competent, confident and professional clinician. The teaching clinic is friendly and professional and open to the public. Patients can be assured that they will be treated by a team of students under the supervision of one of our clinical supervisors. Together, they ensure you receive the highest standards of diagnosis, treatment, and patient care.
  • The programme helps each student to develop into a practitioner who is capable of using and contributing to the body of knowledge and research, which supports the practice of Chinese and Complementary medicine.

Year 1 (Level 4)

This is the foundation to your studies aimed at equipping you with the skills required to be successful in level 5 and 6 and within clinical practice. Within this year you will also be given opportunities to explore subjects such as research, communication, academic writing skills, reflective practice and the therapeutic relationship.

Modules

  • Principles and Diagnostic Skills for Chinese Medicine
    This module aims to provide the student with an understanding of the foundation topics such as yin & yang, zang fu organs, meridian theory and the eight principles.
  • Foundations in Research
    This module will equip you with underpinning knowledge in research to gain skills that will assist you to understand the fundamentals of research methods, understand why different methods and designs are used in the research processes enabling you to make sense of a research paper.
    Developing Academic and Personal Skills
    This module will equip the student with the skills required to be successful in level 5 and 6 and within clinical practice. Within this module you will be given the opportunity to explore subjects such as communication, academic writing skills, reflective practice and the therapeutic relationship.
  • Nutrition
    This module will develop the student’s knowledge of diet and nutrition to enhance the treatment protocol with the aftercare advice: encompassing the physiological and biochemical importance of the macronutrients and macronutrients.
  • Anatomy and Applied Physiology
    This module aims to provide an in depth understanding of the human body and the accompanying physiological process that allow for its optimal functioning. Students will learn the fundamental knowledge of human anatomical and physiological structures and processes of the human body.

Year 2 (Level 5)

Year two builds on the foundations from Level 4 and is more intense learning as you increase you knowledge and understanding of the theory and continue your clinical practice in the clinic at Glyndŵr.

Modules

  • Acupuncture and Syndrome Differentiation
    This module will develop the students’ knowledge and understanding of the main patterns of disharmony and disease within the Chinese medicine model and equip them with the theoretical and practical skills to treatment the conditions.
  • Acupuncture and Point Location
    This module will enhance the students’ knowledge of the meridian theory by acquiring practical skills in acupuncture point location, needling and treatment techniques.
  • Personal and Personal Skill Development
    To explore the appropriate aspects of health and safety regulations and legislation in the clinical environment. To develop the students awareness of professional ethics, their personal strengths, qualities and limitations, and a reflective approach to their practice.
  • Therapeutic Interventions for Musculo-Skeletal Injuries
    This module will provide students with the fundamental knowledge of how musculoskeletal injuries can occur and the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of the most common musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Research
    This module will consolidate students' knowledge and understanding of research methodologies gained at level 4 and equips students with the knowledge and skills to develop their appraisal of research findings.
  • Pathophysiology
    This module will facilitate the student’s application of patho-physiological principles to major disturbances in normal function in specific body systems and understand principles of orthodox medical treatments.

Year 3 (Level 6)

Learning at Level 6 enhances theoretical knowledge and practical skills. It also aims tostimulate the critical evaluation and judgment formation skills of the student through consolidation of the research knowledge and skills acquired at Levels 4 and 5. The overall aim is to enable graduates to become a competent and confident in practice.

Modules

  • Acupuncture and Clinical Practice
    This module will further develop the students’ knowledge and understanding of the diverse clinical applications of Chinese Medicine. The module will also enable students to gain the skills and individual qualities in preparation to register as independent, autonomous, and competent practitioners.
  • Dissertation
    The aim of this module is to stimulate the critical evaluation and judgment formation skills of the student through consolidation of the research knowledge and skills acquired at Levels 4 and 5.
  • Applied Business Practice
    To introduce the student to the different internal and external elements of a business, by exploring common aims and characteristics of a business. Enable students to understand the context in which a business operates and provide the student with an understanding of issues that relate to finance and resource management.
  • Health Psychology for Therapists
    This module aims to develop students’ knowledge and critical understanding of the application of psychological theory to health and illness. This will encompass subjects such as health promotion, communication between practitioners and their patients and stress management.
