Course content
This course is offered in partnership with the University of Wales, Newport.
This is a specialist teaching qualification for those wishing to teach numeracy to adults. The course is designed to meet the LLUK [Lifelong Learning UK] professional standards.
It is a two year, part time course with attendance of two half day sessions per week during the academic year September to June.
The first year of the course includes specialist modules while the second year follows generic modules.
During the course all participants will undertake teaching practice amounting to at least 150 hours over the two years. This will need to be arranged before enrolling on the course.
The course is being offered on Monday and Tuesday evenings 5.30pm - 8.00pm.
In the first year the modules are:
  • Introduction to Adult Numeracy
  • Developing Perspectives on Numeracy
  • Numeracy in Social Context

In the second year the modules are:
  • Curriculum Development for Inclusive Practice
  • Independent Study or Option
  • Professional Practice 2

Assessment
Assessment will be based on written assignments, presentations and actual teaching.
Progression
This qualification meets the LLUK standards for teachers of numeracy in the post-compulsory sector. It does not qualify people to teach in schools.

Additional information
Fees for 2009/2010 are £1610 per year [you may be eligible for a grant from Student Finance to assist in paying these fees.
You will then be invited for an interview and, if successful, you will be offered a place on the course. Enrolment will take place during the first session in September.
