If you are over the age of 16, an Apprenticeship allows you to gain a nationally recognised qualification whilst working in paid employment. Your programme will last 24 months depending on your age and experience. To commence your Apprenticeship you need to be working in the Healthcare industry. The framework supports the broad vision of the sector to develop an increasingly skilled, flexible and effective workforce whilst maintaining high quality and safe care for patients and addresses specific outcomes of the Skills for Health Sector Skills Assessment 2011.

Your Apprenticeship Qualification will enable you to progress onto a Work Based Foundation Degree and you may be able to gain credit for the work you have already done.


The Advanced Apprenticeship programme consists of four elements:

Level 3 Diploma in Clinical Healthcare Support (QCF)
Learners must complete all the Mandatory units (35 credits):
• The role of the health and social care worker
• Principles of infection prevention and control
• Causes and spread of infection
• Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
• Cleaning, decontamination and waste management
• Engage in personal development in health and social or children’s and young persons settings
• Promote communication in health and social or children’s and young persons settings
• Promote equality and inclusion in health and social or children’s and young persons settings
• Promote and implement health and safety in health and social care
• Promote person centred approaches in health and social care
• Promote good practice in handling information in health and social care settings
• Principles for implementing duty of care in health and social or children’s and young person’s settings

Optional units:
Learners must achieve 30 credits from the optional units listed below:
• Select and wear appropriate personal protective equipment for work in healthcare settings
• Prepare individuals for healthcare activities
• Support individuals undertaking healthcare activities
• Emergency first aid skills
• Maintain quality standards in the health sector
• Conduct hearing assessments
• Perform intravenous cannulations
• Obtain and test capillary blood samples
• Obtain venous blood samples
• Remove wound drains
• Carry out vision screening
• Obtain a client history
• Advice and inform individuals on managing their condition
• Support individuals to live at home
• Support individuals who are bereaved
• Support individuals at the end of life
• Implement therapeutic activities
• Contribute to multi-disciplinary team working

Functional Skills
If you do not have the relevant GCSE grades in Maths and English, you will complete a total of two functional skills which will be assessed in the workplace and you may be required to take an exam depending on your current qualification in:
• English level 2
• Maths level 2

Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) and Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS)
ERR and PLTS is assessed through the Level 3 Award in Employment and Personal Learning Skills in Health (QCF).

On completion of the elements above you will be accredited with an Advanced Apprenticeship Certificate.
