Course Summary:
If you have a keen interest in joining the Uniformed Public Services, this programme develops your knowledge and skills over three years, enabling you to resit either GCSE Maths or English.
In both practical and theoretical settings, you will study advanced concepts in government, leadership and physical preparation before moving on to study topics such as land navigation, law, security procedures and citizenship.
Entry requirements
You will need to complete an interview and screening test in maths and English. The entry requirements for this course are five GCSEs graded between 7-5, including English and Maths. However it is possible to study this programme and undertake one GCSE resit in English or Maths.
The first year of the study programme will focus on the achievement of this vital GCSE resit, with a Public Services programme supporting the timetable.

Course programme

Course Content: The course is made up of a number of units which can include: GCSE English / Maths Government Citizenship Team Work and Leadership Physical Preparation Work Placement It also includes a tutorial session to monitor your progress, set targets, support your main programme of study, help your future progression and enhance your life skills. You are able to choose a specialist route for the second year. Options are Uniformed or Non-Uniformed Public Services. You can also progress to a third specialist year of study. The full study programme is the equivalent of three A-levels. Alternatively learners are given priority entry to the Foundation Degree in Criminology (Offender Management) on completion of selected criteria after Year 2. You need to be aware that certain volunteering and work placement events take place at weekends and you will be expected to attend these. How will I be assessed? You will build a portfolio based around evidence generated by the various assessment methods in each unit. You are expected to work on multiple assessments at any one time. You will be assessed through practical demonstrations, logbooks and performance records, written reports and essays, presentations, workbooks, discussions and vivas. Maths and English will be assessed through course work, controlled assessment and final exam. Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required? You are expected to purchase a uniform to wear at College and for practical sessions. Kit costs will vary depending on the items purchased: the cost is non-refundable once the items are ordered. You are also asked to contribute towards the end-of-year celebration event and yearly gym membership. Total costs are approximately £140. There may be additional events during the year to which you are expected to contribute. Financial assistance is available depending on your individual circumstances. For applicants from outside the region or who travel over distance, the College has residential accommodation if required. What can I do after this course? Further Study On successful completion, the course provides an excellent platform for progression to: Leadership and Security in the Public Services (Years 2 and 3) the Foundation Degree in Offender Management Sports Coaching and Development qualifications Careers You may also wish to seek voluntary or paid employment in the Public Services or security industry as a door supervisor, CCTV operator, security guard or to apply for the special constabulary or reservist forces. You do not, of course, have to enter the Public Services as the skills gained on this course are transferable to a wider range of job areas.
