These courses provide academic opportunities for physiotherapists to develop the clinical and basic science knowledge, reasoning and analytical research skills required to carry out advanced physiotherapy assessments and deliver optimal care and management of people with musculoskeletal conditions. Both courses offer modules which facilitate the development of advanced physiotherapy knowledge and skills.
Students on the Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy course have the opportunity to choose an optional module in areas such as Health Economics, Psychology or Management in Organisations.
Students on the Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (with Clinical Placements) course must take the Clinical Education module and undertake placements for a minimum of 150 hours.

Year 1

Courses are divided into modules. You will normally take:

  • MSc – modules totalling 180 credits

  • PG Diploma – modules totalling 120 credits

You are required to take:

  • Research Methods in Health (15 credits)
  • Contemporary Pain Management (15 credits)
  • Physiotherapy Practice in the Lower Quadrant (30 credits)
  • Physiotherapy Practice in the Upper Quadrant (30credits)
  • Muscle & Exercise Physiology (15 credits) or Exercise as Medicine (15 credits)
  • Research project in Rehabilitation & Health (60 credits)
  • Clinical Education in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (15 credits) – this module must be taken by students on the MSc in Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (with Clinical Placements) pathway only

Postgraduate Diploma

You are required to take:

  • Physiotherapy Practice in the Lower Quadrant (30 credits)
  • Physiotherapy Practice in the Upper Quadrant (30credits)
  • Muscle & Exercise Physiology (15 credits) or Exercise as Medicine (15 credits)
  • Contemporary Pain Management (15 credits)
  • Research Methods in Health (15 credits) )
  • Clinical Education in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (15 credits) – this module must be taken by students on the PG Dip in Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (with Clinical Placements) pathway only

Optional Modules

In addition, if you are studying on the MSc or PG Dip Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy course, you are required to take 15 credits from a range of optional modules, which may typically include:
