The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horse Management is a qualification aimed at providing individuals with a range of practical skills and knowledge aimed at preparing you for employment or progression into further training within the equine industry. The Extended Diploma is aimed at learners who have more knowledge of their industry and have ideas of the aspect of industry they would like to specialise in. Through selection of modules of specific importance to chosen career paths it provides a substantial core of knowledge and skills to enhance both employability and entrance to Higher Education.

About this course
The recommended entry requirements are a minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above (which would ideally include Maths and English), or equivalent GNVQ/BTEC qualifications. Entry can also be gained through achieving a relevant National Certificate, this could be the Level 2 Certificate, Extended Certificate or Diploma in Horse Care however other land-based qualifications would be considered on individual merit. What will I study on the course?
You will need to successfully complete about 19 units depending on your selected modules. The qualification includes 8 mandatory units and a range of optional units covering topics which are both practical and theoretical.
The mandatory units that everyone is required to take are:
- Understanding Animal Health
- Planning and Monitoring Feeding
- Fitting Tack and Equipment
- Preparing Horses for Presentation
- Work Experience
- Yard and stable Management
- Anatomy and Physiology
There range of optional units include topics such as:
- Horse fitness
- Riding Horses on the Flat and over Fences
- Stud Management
- Animal Biology
- Horse Rehabilitation and Therapy
- Grassland Management
- Equitation Teaching
- Undertake an Investigative Project
The work experience module will provide you with first-hand experience of working in a competition yard, racing school, riding school or other related equine business. To prepare you for work experience you will undertake practical duties on the college yard at Kirkley, this will be organised on a rota basis. Work experience when possible will be organised around you future career choices, or if still undecided will offer an opportunity to sample a variety of working environments which should help with your progression into employment or further equine training. For all modules you will study both practical and theoretical elements, learning how to do things and why you need to do and know certain things.
The Extended Diploma give you the chance to study different areas that really are of interest to you, especially through the investigative project.
