Short course
However, when simulating a turbulent flow there are many possible models which can be employed. The choice of model can affect the quality of the simulated results hugely.
Large Eddy Simulation (LES) becomes increasingly an established scientific computing approach for predicting transitional and turbulent flows. It is used extensively to elucidate the physics of turbulence and to compute flows of industrial relevance, wherever Reynolds-averaged models are not sufficiently accurate and direct numerical simulation techniques are prohibitively expensive. There are a number of different LES methods currently pursued by researchers, which share some similarities with respect to numerical and physical modelling, but also encompass advantages and shortcomings depending on the ‘design’ details.
This course gives a detailed introduction to unsteady turbulent flow physics, with a particular focus on direct numerical simulation (DNS) and LES methods. It discusses the theoretical and numerical approaches, and the best practice to adopt when conducting an LES. Examples are given of LES of industrial problems demonstrating methods of analysis, verification and visualisation.

What you will learn
Upon completion of the course you will be able to conduct an effective CFD simulation of an unsteady turbulent flow having:
- understood the underlying flow physics
- made a trade-off between different applicable LES models
- selected an appropriate grid resolution based on the flow physics
- verified and visualised the simulation.
This will give immediate benefits to the sponsoring organisation as the returning employee/researcher will have a detailed understanding of turbulent flows, and will know how to apply DNS and LES methods to model unsteady turbulent phenomena. Direct numerical and large eddy simulation methods have been clearly identified as the future for turbulence simulations, hence these are a key capability for any organisation using CFD.
