This course is aimed at building confidence in academic writing skills and oral presentation prior to progression into higher education or employment. The course will cover: There are no entry requirements for this course. On completion of this course, students will: Lectures/workshops will concentrate on developing knowledge, understanding and skills in a participative and interactive environment. Students will develop their learning through both formal teaching and interactive online activities through 30 hours classroom-based study and further directed learning. What are higher level skills and why are they needed
Strategies for learning: note-taking, time management, reading for academic study;

Course programme

Delivery:

On completion of this course, students will:

  • understand the need for planning, structure and academic writing skills in the presentation of views, including how to acknowledge the source of ideas and/or other views.
  • demonstrate skills in accessing, appraising and recording information from a range of sources;
  • adopt appropriate styles of writing and presentation for academic work using conventions for citation and referencing sources
  • adopt appropriate strategies for completing learning tasks both as an individual and working in collaboration with others
  • use appropriate visual aids to support an oral presentation

Lectures/workshops will concentrate on developing knowledge, understanding and skills in a participative and interactive environment. Students will develop their learning through both formal teaching and interactive online activities through 30 hours classroom-based study and further directed learning.

Assessment:

  • A portfolio of tasks (100%)
  • Group essay (40%), 1000 words in total. This is a group mark.
  • Group presentation based on essay (20%), 10 minutes, plus 5 minutes for questions in total. This is a group mark.
  • Individual written summary (40%) 300 to 500 words, demonstrating an understanding of why it is important to plan, structure and use appropriate academic writing and referencing and how this is achieved. This is an individual mark.
