All About Paper

Course Description

Transforming the banality of paper students will engage in a dynamic creative process of creating individual sculptures based on the works of Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moor, Louise Nevelson and the environment of Brown University’s campus. In this course students will receive one on one instruction in how to extrapolate from their immediate surroundings to make semi-monumental non-linear sculptures using an assortment paper as their primary medium.

Mapping Alberto Giacometti Style- Giacometti was famous for his elongated exaggerated human forms. In this assignment students will notate copious observations of the essence of people. Students will sculpt Giacometti style figures emblematic of the persons seen on their routes to class.

Scaling Henry Moore- the British sculptor Henry Moore was noted for his large abstract public sculptures of reclining human figures. In this assignment student will take a walking tour of the nearly dozen public sculptures on Brown’s campus. Students will create a Henry Moore style selfie to “scale”.

Architectural Expressionism- offers students interplay between abstract expressionism and architectural aesthetics. Using the works of Louise Nevelson and the architectural structures on campus as points of departure, students will design and make an abstract expressionist sculpture.
Each project is allotted a week of studio time offering students ample opportunity for exploration, reconsideration and conclusion.
