AS and A2 Level English Language and Literature Entry Requirements

Content
AS Level:
Unit 1 - Introduction to Language and Literature Study

An Anthology will be provided at the start of the course, containing a range of literary and non-literary texts which will be thematically linked. There will be opportunities to consider the development of language and style over time. Assessment is by examination.

Unit 2 - Themes in Language and Literature

A course work folder of 1700-2300 words will be produced. Candidates will study a pair of set texts and undertake independent research on them. Two pieces of written work will be produced, one of which will be creative.

A2 Level:
Unit 3 - Talk in Life and Literature

The emphasis in this unit is on spoken language. Candidates will study one play and a variety of transcripts of real life spoken situations.

Unit 4 - Text Transformation

A course work folder of 1500-2000 words will be produced. Candidates will choose two literary works from a selection of prescribed authors and transform them into different genres.

A commentary which reflects upon the transformation will also be produced.

Methods of Study
Class discussion, Drama, Group Presentation, Poster work, Library research, written assignments, Audio/video tapes and DVDs, visits to productions, poetry days and ICT.

Assessment
There will be regular assessment, with written feedback on work. The AQA mark schemes will be used. Exams are available at the end of the AS year and the A2 year.

Progression
From the AS you can progress to A2 Level and from A2 Level to Higher Education or employment.
