Course programme

AS and A2 level Health and Social Care

An interesting and challenging course which will help you develop the skills, knowledge and understanding you need for Higher Education or employment.

WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING ON THE COURSE?
During the course you will learn about a variety of social, physical and psychological aspects of health and social care. Individual units will include:

·promoting quality care

·communication in care settings

·promoting good health

·mental health issues

·anatomy and physiology in practice

·care practice and provision

The combination of units taken, which may include both compulsory and optional units, will depend upon the course you choose to study. The compulsory units will develop your understanding of the biological sciences, health and social care practice and research techniques used in the services. Optional units allow you to study aspects which interest you in more depth.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?
Role play, creating posters, visiting exhibitions and services, attending conferences, developing and undertaking research, work placement, presenting, reporting, interviewing, group work, using information technology, discussing and problem solving.
You will have subject tutors who will guide you through the course and help you manage your workload. The emphasis will be on research and problem solving through assessed work, which will focus on the world of work.
A week long block of work experience will be carried out during the second half of the Autumn Term. Please note that all students are now legally required to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check before starting work experience. For the CRB check an additional payment (currently £36) will be necessary.

HOW WILL THE COURSE BE ASSESSED?
All units are assessed either by work recorded in your Portfolio of Evidence, or by external examination at the end of the unit.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED TO TAKE THIS COURSE?
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or better, preferably including English (language), Maths and Science. However, we like to look at individual achievements and will consider a range of qualifications and experience. An enthusiasm for science and an ability to research and meet deadlines is important.

WHAT OTHER SUBJECTS COULD I DO WITH HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE?
Health and Social Care combines well with most other social science subjects such as Sociology and Psychology. Also courses such as Biology, Sign Language and Childcare link well.

AND AFTER THE COURSE?
You could enter employment. You could combine employment with job related training and gain further accreditation for your skills and experience through an NVQ training programme. You could continue your studies in Higher Education on a degree course or HND in related subject areas such as Health Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Physiotherapy, primary teaching and nursing.
