Course programme

AS and A Level Art and Design (Textiles)
The course involves printed, dyed and constructed textile design within Art and its application.

What does the course consist of?
In Year 1 you will study units 1 & 2 for an AS Level. In Year 2 you will take units 3 & 4 to complete the full Advanced Level.
Unit 1: Practical Coursework

You will be encouraged to investigate the expressive nature of the formal elements of textile design, including colour, form, line, pattern, shape, texture and tone. All of these elements can be applied to Textiles and form an integral part of any artist/designer's vocabulary. Any method of responding to these expressive Textile elements may be used from photography/collage to paint/textile/printing/dyeing and construction.
You will be expected to develop a personal visual response to any starting point that may be a theme set for you or of your own choosing with advice from your teacher. Ideas should be well researched and form an integral part of your creative thinking. You will demonstrate in your research and working method an understanding of continuity and change in Textiles in different traditions and cultures, styles and practices and make connections between the purpose of your own work and the working methods of others. You will be assessed by coursework

Unit 2: Externally set assignment

You will be given a title or theme from which you will develop your own personal response. There will be a preparatory period of approximately two months in advance of an eight hour examination period. During this period you will research and make studies in your work journals and elsewhere. You will be assessed by preparatory work & an external timed exam

Unit 3: Practical work linked to a Personal Study

You will be required to research, evaluate and analyse your own work in relation to that of other artists and designers. It will involve visiting exhibitions and galleries and extensive research of theories of Art and Design. You will identify creative practical work, undertake investigative Textile research and develop a range of possible practical solutions that illustrate the development of your own visual language, showing sensitive use of materials and processes. Your work will include a personal written illustrated study of 1000- 3000 words which is relevantly linked to your practical work. The final work will generally be a written and illustrated dissertation of 1000-3000 words. You will be assessed by coursework

Unit 4: Externally set assignment

This is the culmination of the course. You will be given a theme to investigate during a preparatory period in advance of a controlled test of 12 hours. This will give you the opportunity to show to what extent you now understand the formal elements of the textile processes practices that you have used. You will be assessed by preparatory work & an externally set timed exam

What else do I need to know?
The course is taught through a series of practical studio-based sessions with an emphasis on individual tuition within a group structure. Specific textile crafts are taught and applied to individual work. The specialist Art Studio contains a textile print table, lino presses and batik/screenprinting facilities in an open plan environment including an Art History and Design library seminar room with access to computers.
Most subjects combine well with this course. It is particularly suitable as an addition to Art & Design as a specialist choice, Drama & Theatre Studies, Design & Technology, Media Studies, Critical and Contextual Studies in Art, at AS Level.
Career development can be specifically related to fashion, the textile design industry, costume and theatre design, marketing, buying and a BA Art & Design in Fashion/Textile Design/Conservation.
Group sizes vary according to the nature of the textile activity and specialist tuition required. You will be expected to purchase sketchbooks throughout the course. You will need to purchase a selection of individual drawing and painting materials for home/independent work and some textile materials. This GCE A Level normally runs but will be available subject to demand. A small charge is made for specific textile fabrics when used individually.
