AS and A Level Design and Technology Product Design (Graphic Products)
Product Design looks at manufactured and designed products. The products appearance, function and construction is analysed via drawings and virtual modelling. The subject also allows you to express your own imaginative design ideas and to gain a considerable insight into how products are made and designed with the emphasis on manufacturing methods, graphic techniques, presentation, prototyping and constructional skills.

What does the course consist of?
In Year 1 you will study units 1 and 2 for an AS Level. In Year 2 you will take units 3 and 4 to complete the full Advanced Level.
Unit 1: Product Development: Portfolio of Creative Skills

This Unit in is in 3 parts:
A. Investigation Task:

You research and analyse a product via drawings, investigation and virtual modelling.
B. Design Task:

You will design a product around a brief that could be made into a product in task C.
C. Manufacture:

You will construct a model of a selection of different items to demonstrate your making skills using resistant modelling materials (polymers, wood and metals).
You will be assessed by coursework which equates to 60%

Unit 2: Knowledge and understanding of Product Design

In this unit you will develop your knowledge and understanding of a wide range of materials and processes used in the field of design. It is important for you as designers to learn about materials and processes so that you can develop a greater understanding of how products can be designed and manufactured. You will also learn about industrial and commercial practices and the importance of quality checks and health and safety issues.
You will be assessed by examination 40%

A2 Second Year

Unit 3: Design for the future

In this unit you will develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of modern design and manufacturing practices and contemporary design issues. The modern designer must have a good working knowledge of the use of information and communication technology (ICT) and systems and control technology in the design and manufacture of products. They must also be aware of the important contributions of designers from the past, which may provide inspiration for future design. It is increasingly important that you develop an awareness of the impact of design and technological activities upon the environment. Sustainable product design is a key feature of modern design practice.
You will be assessed by examination 40%

Unit 4: Product Development- Commercial Design

In this unit you are expected to apply the skills you have aquired and developed throughout this course and to design and make a product of your choice that complies with the requirements of a Graphic Products project.
You are expected to take ownership of all aspects of your work and reflect how a professional designer might deal with a design problem and its resolution. The project must provide opportunities to consult/gain comment from a client or user group. The sustainability impact of your product must be considered and potential impact on the environment measured.
Graphic product project has two clearly defined pathways:
Conceptual Design and The Built Environment
Conceptual Design projects can be designing a wide range of three dimensional products e.g. packagaing design, product/industrial design, point of sale display and vehicle design.
The built environment project focuses on the surroundings that provide the setting for human activity e/g. architecture, interior design, theatre sets and garden design.
You will be assessed by coursework 60%

What else do I need to know?
The course compliments Maths, Sciences or Art and Design at AS or A level. The course is important for anyone considering courses as higher education or work in Art & Design, Product or Industrial Design, Architecture, Surveying and Engineering.
Students are required to pay the college book deposit for the use of text books and to pay for the materials used to construct their 3D prototypes.
