About this course

You will need: At least five GCSEs at grade C or above to include English Language and B in German at GCSE. You need a good memory and the ability to organise and analyse material, Because: a large working vocabulary is essential you will have to produce pieces of extended writing in German.

Course programme

AS and A Level German
The course will allow you to develop your fluency and understanding of the language. You will learn about issues which affect people in German-speaking countries.

What does the course consist of?
For AS Level you will study the following topic areas:
  • Media
  • Popular culture
  • Healthy living and lifestyle
  • Family and relationships

For A level you will study 3 more topic areas:
  • The Environment
  • Popular culture
  • The Multicultural society
  • Contemporary social issues

In addition to these, you will study two cultural topics e.g.
  • a region of Germany
  • a period of history or the work of an author
  • dramatist
  • poet
  • director
  • musician

You will study units 1 and 2 for an AS level and units 3 and 4 to complete the full Advanced Level.
Unit 1:
in which your ability to understand written and spoken German will be tested. You will also have to write approximately 200 words in German in the form of a letter, report or article.
Unit 2:
in which your spoken German will be assessed. You will take part in a conversation based on the AS topics.
Unit 3:
in this unit your reading and listening comprehension skills will be assessed and you will also be required to translate a passage of German into English. Finally, you will have to write an essay in French on one of the cultural topics which you have studied.
Unit 4:
this will be an oral examination in which your ability to express and defend your point of view will be tested. The discussion will be based on the A Level topics.
What else do I need to know?
During the course lessons will include listening practice, reading a variety of texts and articles, discussions, presentations and role plays, as well as comprehension tasks, essay writing and for Advanced Level, translation.
You will have access to listening facilities, audio and video cassettes and the college IT network. A range of books and magazines is available in the College library. We strongly recommend that you buy a large dictionary for use at home.
