Course Structure

The Level 3 Animal Care course is divided into seven comprehensive modules.

Module 1: Cats 1.1 Discuss how important the breed of cat is as a selection criterion.

1.2 Describe what impact improper feeding can have on a cat's health.

1.3 Define whether it is possible to train a cat.

Module 2: Dogs 2.1 Evaluate the dangers of inadequate feeding and overfeeding.

2.2 Investigate canine nutrition.

2.3 Discuss exercise.

2.4 Define grooming.

2.5 Analyse how a disease/illness is identified.

Module 3: Horses 3.1 Discuss points you should consider when buying a horse.

3.2 Define conformation.

3.3 Describe the ideal stable.

3.4 List for what purposes you would use a dandy brush.

3.5 List for what purposes you would use a body brush.

3.6 Identify the symptoms of Colic.

Module 4: Birds 4.1 Describe the varieties of housing available to the bird keeper.

4.2 Explain how to handle a bird correctly.

4.3 Identify what clues you would look for if a bird seemed unwell.

4.4 Discuss how you would identify and treat constipation.

Module 5: Rabbits 5.1 Analyse the factors that one might need to consider when choosing a rabbit.

5.2 Discuss suitable housing for a pet rabbit.

5.3 Define a healthy diet for an adult working buck and investigate why caution is necessary when feeding fresh plants to your rabbits.

5.4 Describe the correct way to handle a rabbit.

5.5 Identify some common ailments a rabbit might suffer from.

Module 6: Reptiles and Amphibians 6.1 Explain the distinguishing characteristics of reptiles and amphibians.

6.2 Describe how you would house reptiles or amphibians.

6.3 Discuss how you would generally care for reptiles/amphibians.

6.4 Evaluate feeding routines.

Module 7: Guinea Pigs, Hamsters and Mice 7.1 Describe suitable housing for a guinea pig.

7.2 Evaluate what temperature guinea pigs should be kept at and discuss what happens if the temperature drops.

7.3 Analyse what food should you never feed to a guinea pig and explain why.

7.4 Explain what can happen if a female hamster with a litter is disturbed and how can this be avoided.
