Brief Description of the Course:

(NB: All programmes are based on credit accumulation. Each unit of study is worth either 5 or 10 credits towards the total amount needed to achieve the qualification).

The College offers the opportunity to study at level 3 (A level equivalent) for students who are considering a future career as a Veterinary Nurse and wish to develop a comprehensive understanding of animal nursing skills - encompassing practical techniques, academic knowledge and technical skills. The course incorporates a mix of practical sessions, classroom lectures, industry visits and case study exercises. Students enjoy the wide variety of theory and practical subjects combined with a range of projects and assessments.

Entry Requirements

Minimum entry requirements for the 90 Credit Diploma are 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above including English, Maths, and Science. Upon successful completion of the 90 Credit Diploma, students may progress onto the Extended Diploma.

Relevant work experience in the Animal industry (a minimum of two weeks in duration) will have been completed with a satisfactory reference in support of that work.

Applicants for these courses are expected to show a strong interest in progressing into the Veterinary Nursing profession.

90 Credit Diploma

List of Units:

  • Understand and Promote Animal Health: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of animal health and how these can be put into practice.
  • Understand the Principles of Animal Biology: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of animal biology.
  • Understand Animal Welfare and Breed Development: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of animal welfare and breed development.
  • Understand and Interpret Animal Behaviour and Communication: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of animal behaviour and communication.
  • Manage Animal Accommodation: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of animal accommodation and how these can be applied in practice.
  • Plan and Monitor Animal Feeding: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of animal feeding and how these can be applied in practice.
  • Undertake Animal Handling and Safe Working: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of animal handling and safe working and how these can be applied in practice.
  • Understand Animal Anatomy and Physiology: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of animal anatomy and physiology.
  • Understand the Principles of Wildlife Populations, Ecology and Conservation: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of wildlife populations, ecology and conservation and how these can be applied in practice.
  • Understand the Principles of Animal Nursing: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of animal nursing and how these can be put into practice.

Extended Diploma

List of Units:

  • Undertake and Review Work Related Experience in the land based industries: The aim of this unit is to give learners the skills needed to identify, participate in and review work experience in the environmental and land-based sector.
  • Undertake an Investigative Project in the Animal Management Sector: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of undertaking an investigative project and how this can be put into practice.
  • Understand and Undertake Wildlife Management and Rehabilitation: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of wildlife management and rehabilitation and how these can be put into practice.
  • Understand the Principles of Animal Nutrition: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of animal nutrition.
  • Understand and Carry Out Farm Livestock Husbandry: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of farm livestock husbandry and how these can be put into practice.
  • Understand the Principles of Animal Breeding and Genetics: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of animal breeding and genetics.
  • Undertake Retail Merchandising for the Land Based Sector: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of retail merchandising in the land based sector and how this can be put into practice.
  • Undertake Estate Skills: This unit aims to introduce learners to the estate skills and knowledge and how this can be applied in practice.
  • Undertake the Practice of Equine Health, Handling and Husbandry: This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the principles of horse health, handling and husbandry and how these can be applied in practice.

Assessments:

Assessments will include assignments, presentations, reports, practical observations and short answer tests.

Industrial / Work Experience

Students on the Extended Diploma course must attend a relevant placement in the animal industry

The 90 Credit Diploma Animal Management (Animal Nursing Care Assistant) provides the qualification and experience for entry into the animal care industry. Students who successfully complete the course may wish to take up employment in one of the following industries:

It is expected that students who complete the Extended Diploma in Animal Management (Animal Nursing Care Assistant) will progress onto Veterinary Nurse training.

Progression:

As a course equivalent to A Level the Level 3 Extended Diploma is an ideal spring board for progression depending on UCAS points gained. Students may wish to continue their studies in Higher Education, eg:

  • FdSc Veterinary Nursing leading to a BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing top-up if desired
  • BSc (Hons) Animal Behaviour & Welfare
  • FdSc Welfare of Animals

Special Requirements:

1 Specialist Clothing and Equipment:

  • Protective clothing for animal practical work must be purchased from the School of Veterinary Nursing at the start of the Academic Year. Laboratory coats / wellingtons / waterproof jacket are also required
  • Protective clothing must be worn for all practical work
  • All body piercing, jewellery and nail extensions must be removed prior to working on the Veterinary Nursing unit and long hair must be tied back.
