Course programme

You will normally need the following qualifications: 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above to include English, maths and science. Applicants for places on the course will be selected on the basis of their qualifications, experience and their potential to contribute to and successfully complete the programme. All applicants will need an academic or suitable employer's reference.


Cornwall College Newquay has formed an exciting partnership with Newquay Zoo and Blue Reef Aquarium to offer animal related courses, which combine excellent academic teaching and vocational training. The course reflects the balance of skills and knowledge needed to perform well in both scientific and animal management environments. Theory and practice are integrated to ensure that this qualification supports career prospects and educational progression.


The course comprises of 10 units covering both Animal Science and Animal Management topics. In addition to the City and Guilds qualification, all students will follow a programme which develops and assesses skills, such as numeracy and IT, required in all types of employment.


The emphasis of the course will be on the study of exotic animals, animal collections and wild animals. A primary aim is to give students first-hand experience of handling and observing animals in captivity and in natural habitats.
