Course programme

  • Providing Food and Water to Animals - The learner will be able to demonstrate appropriate recognition, preparation and selection of feeding equipment and foodstuffs needed to keep an animal at its optimal nutritional state. The learner will also be aware of different life stages and how to feed animals during these stages.
  • Maintaining Animal Accommodation - The learner will know how animal accommodation should be designed and constructed so that it meets the welfare needs of the animals. The learner will develop the skills required to prepare, clean and maintain animal housing.
  • Animal Behaviour and Handling - The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with a basic understanding of normal and abnormal behaviour. The learner will also be provided with the knowledge and skills to approach animals whilst taking account of their displayed behaviours to reduce risk and stress.
  • Principles of Pharmacy - The purpose of this unit to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding of a veterinary pharmacy. It introduces the learner to pharmacy legislation and management; enabling them to work safely in a clinical environment. The learner will be able to support qualified members of staff to provide veterinary pharmaceutical products.
  • Animal Anatomy & Physiology - This unit aims to give the learner an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of companion animals. Learners will be given the knowledge to describe the structure and function of the major body systems. This unit will also provide learners with the correct terminology to employ when describing animal anatomy and physiology.
  • Introduction to Animal Breeds and Grooming - The aim of this unit is to develop the learner’s knowledge and understanding of basic concepts of animal evolution and the role of domestication on their development. Upon completion of this unit the learner will be able to identify commonly kept breeds of dogs, cats and other pet species. The learner will also carry out practical small animal grooming and understand the reasons for grooming.
  • Principles of Infection Control - The purpose of this unit is to provide the learner with the knowledge and understanding of infectious organisms and how these cause clinical disease in animals. The unit focuses the importance of how to prevent the spread of infection, to maintain asepsis and sterility in the clinical environment. The learner will be able to correctly use disinfectants and apply them to the working environment safely
  • Principles of Basic Animal Nursing Assistance - The purpose of this unit is to give learners an understanding of how to assist in the basic nursing of animals. This involves an introduction to first aid; how to describe and identify wounds and injuries and shock. Learners will also develop the knowledge of recording an animal’s temperature, pulse and respiration and be able to recognise and identify abnormalities.
  • Carry out Reception Duties - · The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills required to carry out reception duties. The unit covers the important skills of welcoming and receiving people, handling enquiries and making appointments. Dealing with members of the public in a polite manner, whilst questioning them to find out what they require.
