The APM Practitioner Qualification (APMPQ) assesses a delegate's appropriate application of knowledge areas defined in the APM Body of Knowledge. It is an International Project Management Association (IPMA) Level C Qualification.

The APMPQ is the only project management qualification in the UK that actually assesses the capability of a project manager and is designed to provide the individual with an internationally recognised qualification that confirms their competence in project management.

Please note: the APM Practitioner Qualification is an assessment centre, not a training course. There is an associated APMPQ Preparation Workshop for candidates who wish to undertake preparation before attending the assessment centre.

Target Audience:

The APMPQ is an intermediate qualification for project management practitioners who can demonstrate an ability to manage non-complex projects or run a key control function of a large-scale project.

About this course

Candidates wishing to take the APMPQ are likely to have at least three-years' experience in responsible leadership functions of non-complex projects. They should also have passed the APMP or equivalent qualification (e.g. PMP®, ISEB Certificate in Project Management, Open University Project Management Module M865) or demonstrate a good understanding of the APM Body of Knowledge with relevant Continuing Professional Development. Delegates are required to provide a project-based CV and complete an APM Competency Self-assessment for review prior to attending the PQ assessment centre.

Course programme

The assessment centre runs over 48 hours and with continuous assessment in structured sessions, commencing typically at lunchtime on day one and finishing at lunchtime on day three. Due to the intensity of the assessment this event is strongly recommended that candidates are residential as working into the evening is required.

The daily timings for this event are typically:

  • Day 1: 11:30 to 19:30
  • Day 2: 08:25 to 18:00
  • Day 3: 08:25 to 12:30

The event can be broken down into the following categories:

Individual work:

  • Candidates will be expected to answer written questions based on a case study and a question regarding current issues in project management
  • Candidates will be interviewed individually by their lead assessor.

Group work:

  • Candidates will be observed working in groups of three or four by accredited assessors discussing and solving problems related to the case study.

This qualification assesses a delegate's ability to apply project management skills and techniques to a non-complex project, or to assist in the management of a complex project. The candidate will be assessed against 30 criteria, demonstrating that they can analyse, identify and understand issues and information surrounding the management of a non-complex project.
