Wanting to provide a clear definition of household appliances, it is possible to define household appliances as appliances or small machines powered by electrical conduction and intended for domestic use. Many objects that today we define electrical appliances pre-existed electrification based, for their functioning, on human or animal physical energy; examples among many are: the hand-operated blender, the hand-operated washing machine, the bellows vacuum cleaner, the roller massager (which later became a vibrator). The first attempts to electrify everyday tools were experimented in the field of small objects, first of all and starting from the end of the 1800s, objects equipped with electrical resistance such as teapots and kettles. The diffusion of household appliances in Europe underwent a sharp increase between 1930 and 1970, especially in Northern Europe (AEG, Electrolux, Siemens, Braun, Philips), and to a considerable extent also in England and France. Only in the seventies, however, did we witness a real explosion.
