Course programme

Course structure 2 days of lectures and demonstrations with opportunities for hands-on experience.
What you will learn
  • Understanding of a range of gas phase sampling methods including Container-based techniques (rigid and non-rigid)
  • Ambient air sampling
  • Static and dynamic headspace sampling including micro-extraction chambers
  • Use of thermal desorption tubes for sampling volatile organic compounds
  • Knowledge of two important analytical approaches to volatiles analysis: thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) and selected ion-flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS)
  • Appreciation of the use of mass spectrometry data for compound identification
  • Awareness of the main parameters, limitations and potential pitfalls relating to volatiles analysis
  • Experience with the use of hand-held photoionisation detectors (PID) for rapid field assessment of VOCs.
