This short course will give you the knowledge to select and critically appraise optimal techniques for VOC sampling and analysis.

What you will learn
What you will learn
- Understanding of a range of gas phase sampling methods including Container-based techniques (rigid and non-rigid)
- Ambient air sampling
- Static and dynamic headspace sampling including micro-extraction chambers
- Use of thermal desorption tubes for sampling volatile organic compounds
- Knowledge of two important analytical approaches to volatiles analysis: thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) and selected ion-flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS)
- Appreciation of the use of mass spectrometry data for compound identification
- Awareness of the main parameters, limitations and potential pitfalls relating to volatiles analysis
- Experience with the use of hand-held photoionisation detectors (PID) for rapid field assessment of VOCs.
