INTRODUCTION

This is an exciting course from Edexcel. No other Exam Board yet has an A Level course that runs in the same way. You will spend the majority of lessons actually working on a computer when you are not taking them apart! The course is based on e-learning. This means that most resources are computer based, you work mainly on a computer, keep portfolio evidence on a computer and your portfolio of evidence is submitted to the exam board at the end of the year in an e-format.

There are a maximum of 3 exams depending on which combination of units you study. All other units are assessed via coursework. This course requires a considerable commitment as there is a consistent workload and you need to be prepared for that. It is not suitable to mix with other similar coursework based A levels.

You will work on more than 1 unit at a time and you may also be taking other subjects, so good time management is essential! Full details of the units of study are given below.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will work on life-like assignments using real commercial Clients. This will be as close to working in the real world as it gets! You will investigate your Clients problems and then try to solve some of them. Each assignment is composed of small tasks with a detailed mark scheme. You will informally develop skills in communication by talking with Clients and employees.

You will formally study Key Skills in Improving Own Learning and Performance and Problem Solving. Both are linked to the Applied course and both gain valuable UCAS points.

You will become proficient in many of the common Microsoft applications as well as in more specialist software such as DreamWeaver, Flash, Adobe Photoshop, and Visual Studio, Visual Basic etc.

You will learn the value of testing and prototyping as you develop your solution.

You will learn to manage your time.

HOW WILL I LEARN?

You will be taught in a class with a maximum size of 20.

You will be taught by experienced teachers, many of whom are also Examiners.

All computer rooms are fully networked with high spec computers. A fully resourced Library for learning out of lesson time with bookable computers.

You can also drop into other classes to use a spare computer. A mixture of whole class teaching, small group work and independent project work.

Your tutor or class teacher will be your main source of help but you can also ask anyone in the ICT Division for help.

All resources are online and are accessible from anywhere in the college as well as from home so you will have no excuse!

It is important to note that a course of this nature requires a great deal of commitment from you will need to work a minimum of 10 hours outside of the classroom to meet all your coursework deadlines
