Course Overview

This is a broad-based three-year biology course that allows increased specialisation in the final year. The course looks at the interaction of biological systems with the environment and focuses on the development of the skills necessary to apply biological concepts to the solution of practical problems.

In years 1 and 2 students develop core knowledge and understanding in the areas of molecular biology, human biology, chemistry, laboratory and investigative techniques, ecology, and the legal and regulatory framework that governs the application of science. The final year (3) allows the student to choose taught units from the thematic areas developed in the first and second year and undertake a double weighted research project that offers the chance for a student to understand a topic in greater depth than is possible with the taught units.

The course involves strong components of laboratory and fieldwork. Our experience with other courses within the School indicates that these placements afford a useful opportunity for students to explore possible career options.

Alternatively, students may progress to Masters courses and further research.

Mature student entry is encouraged, candidates being considered based upon relevant professional experience and/or qualifications.
