About the course

This HNC has been designed to cover a wide variety of chemical concepts and processes to give you a broad range of career and progression choices upon completion. It includes a high practical content to improve your confidence and ability in practical laboratory skills, including developing skills in organic synthesis, purification and analysis. You’ll undertake a programme of practical work to prepare you for a career in the field of chemistry, with a strong focus on theoretical concepts, interpretation of data and scientific research techniques.

Applied Chemistry will provide an introduction to higher level chemistry structured in a way to make it relevant to current industrial and commercial applied chemistry. The level of study sits between A Level and undergraduate level, building a framework of knowledge that will allow academic progression within this chemistry. It will also provide the sort of chemical knowledge and laboratory skills directly applicable to an industrial setting.

The new Centre of Excellence for STEM at Kings Road will house the provision where this course will run. It will boast a fully equipped analytical laboratory with commercial equivalent equipment and modern state-of-the-art teaching laboratories.

If you are currently working in a related industry or are simply looking for a part-time route on level 4 and 5 qualifications in your own local area, then this course is for you!

Entry requirements

You will need to have:

GCSE grades A-C (4-9) in maths, English and science
two  A Levels in Science at grades A*-E or a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Sciences, or a Level 3 Access to Higher Education in Science or other related level 3 qualifications.

Other professional qualifications.
Upon interview we would consider appropriate professional qualifications along with work related experience as long as core GCSEs had been achieved

What you'll learn

The academic year is broken down into two semesters. Each semester will contain four units.

SEMESTER ONE UNITS

Organic Chemistry
Develops the principles and practical techniques of organic chemistry. Rationalisation of structure and bonding is used to aid understanding of reaction mechanisms and functional group conversions.

Inorganic Chemistry
Covers the foundations of inorganic chemistry relating to structure and bonding, together with the chemistry of important elements and compounds and a review of some major industrial applications.

Physical Chemistry
Provides an understanding of concepts and practical techniques in physical chemistry. These include thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, conductivity, electrochemical cells and electrolysis.

Employability Skills
Provides you with the opportunity to acquire honed employability skills required for effective employment.

SEMESTER TWO UNITS

Chemical Laboratory Techniques
Gives you the opportunity to practise and become proficient in a range of practical skills and data analysis commonly used in analytical and preparative chemistry.

Analysis of Scientific Data and Information
Develops skills in mathematical and statistical techniques used in the analysis of scientific data, together with an understanding of the limitations in reporting results.

Environmental Monitoring and Analysis
Provides you with an understanding of natural environmental cycles and the influence of pollutants on ecosystems. The sources and effects of environmental pollutants together with techniques of sampling and chemical analysis are examined.

Biochemistry of Macromolecules and Metabolic Pathways
Develops practical skills and examine the chemical characteristics of amino acids, monosaccharides, nucleotides and fatty acids. These are used to develop an understanding of the structure and function of related biological macromolecules.
