The Advanced GCE is made up of three mandatory units at AS and three further units at A2.

What modules are covered?

In the first year learners will study three mandatory units: Unit G040 Using ICT to Communicate: Learners will use their presentation knowledge and skills to create a portfolio of different communications, including a presentation on different methods of communicating information and the technologies that support them.They will also compare a collection of standard documents used by organisations. Unit G041 How Organisations use ICT: Learners will study how organisations (including one large organisation) collect, disseminate and use information, how they manage the flow of information between sections or departments and the way they use ICT to access and exchange information. Unit G042 ICT Solutions for Individuals and Society: Learners will produce a presentation of the results of a single investigation, including the use of a spreadsheet to analyse numeric data, along with a report on the sources and methods used to find information and a report that explains the impact of the availability of electronic information. In the second year learners will study one mandatory unit and two optional units: Unit G048 Working to a Brief: Learners will improve their performance and working relationships through the planning, implementation, management and evaluation of an ICT project.They will be asked to find a solution to a brief chosen from a list.The briefs are set by OCR. Unit G049 Numerical Modelling Using Spreadsheets: Learners will create a spreadsheet to meet specified requirements.The specified requirements will require the use of some of the more specialist and complex spreadsheet facilities associated with aspects of numerical modelling. Unit G053 Developing and Creating Websites: Learners need to use software to develop web pages to convey relevant information to website visitors.

How will I be assessed?

Unit G041 is externally assessed as an exam and the other two units at AS are internal portfolio based assessment.At A2 all three units are internal portfolio based assessment with OCR providing the brief for the mandatory unit.

By application and completion of a successful interview.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Full level 2

Five grade C GCSE’s and above including English and Maths.

What can I do after this course?

This would normally be studied alongside other AS and A2 study.ICT complements a wide variety of other subjects such as Business, Media and Photography. These specifications are designed to give a broad introduction to this sector and aim to prepare learners for further study in higher education or to help them obtain direct entry into employment.ICT features in many job roles and these skills are essential in today’s world.
