BTEC Level 3 National Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma

The Applied Law National Certificate is equivalent to 1 AS Level and the Subsidiary Diploma is equivalent to 1 A2 Level. Both can be combined with other A Level study and give UCAS points so you can go on to University.

What modules are covered?

Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Applied Law

The three mandatory units are:

Unit 1: Dispute Solving in the Legal System
The aim of this unit is to give learners an understanding of the difference between civil and criminal law, how this determines in which courts disputes are resolved in the legal system, and the personnel, both lawyers and lay people, involved in the resolution process, together with a knowledge about the financing of advice and representation and alternatives to the courts.

Unit 2: Understanding Law Making
The aim of this unit is to provide learners with an understanding of the different ways in which laws are created and their importance, together with knowledge of how laws are interpreted, and the impact of European law and institutions.

Unit 3: Aspects of Legal Liability
The aim of this unit is to give learners an understanding of the tort of negligence and the principles of criminal liability, together with knowledge of damages and the aims of sentencing.

Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Law
You will study a further 3 units from the following:

· Unit 4: Unlawful Homicide and Police Powers
· Unit 5: Aspects of Property Offences and Police Powers
· Unit 6: Contract Law

How will I be assessed?

A variety of assessment methods are used but most work is through assignments. For each unit of study you will be allocated a grade (pass, merit or distinction).

By application and completion of a successful interview.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Full level 2

Five grade C GCSE’s and above including English and Maths.

English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

What can I do after this course?

Law is always a highly valued and universally well regarded subject. It has a wide application for different careers within the law, but also for many career paths and professions in the business studies areas. The study of law can be a sound background for many varied careers.

This would normally be studied alongside other AS and A2 study. Law complements a wide variety of other subjects such as Psychology and Sociology.

Fees

Course tuition fees are free for UK students under 19yrs.

All students may be charged for materials e.g. equipment, clothing etc.

UK students aged 19 and over will need to pay tuition fees as well as any materials, registration and exam fees.Some adults may be eligible for free tuition.Please contact us for more fee information.

The 24+ Advanced Learning Loan

If you are 24 or over at start of this course, you can apply for a new loan to cover the course fees. There are no repayments until the course is completed and you are earning £21000 or more. Therefore if you earn up to £21000 a year there’s nothing to pay back. If you earn £22000 a year your loan repayments would be as little as £7 per month. Call us for more information.
