The MSc Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology, one of the only courses of its kind in the world, fully integrates positive psychology and coaching psychology to create an innovative training programme for those promoting wellbeing.
This course is available in the following three options:
Full-time on-campus (12 months)
Full-time distance learning (12 months)
Part-time distance learning (24 months)
There is a growing recognition within the world’s coaching and positive psychology community that such integration is an important step forward, providing clients with a more open-minded approach to their mental health. From the point of view of positive psychology, the course will have a strong foundation in cutting-edge theory and research relating to wellbeing. The coaching element will feature advanced training in working with clients and groups in professional capacities.
About this course
Our aim is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to be able to help people and organisations to flourish. It combines the study of cutting-edge empirical research and theory on wellbeing with the practical skills and competencies you need to apply this expertise in the real world. The result is a course designed to empower students to truly make a positive difference in the world.
Positive psychology (PP) has been defined as “the science and practice of improving wellbeing”. The field encompasses many different topics, including happiness, positive emotions, resilience, hope, strengths, flourishing and psychological development.
The practice of Coaching Psychology may be described as a process for enhancing wellbeing and performance in personal life, educational and work domains. It is underpinned by models of coaching grounded in established adult and child learning theories or psychological theories and approaches.
The course features six substantive modules – two mainly focused in positive psychology and two in coaching with a clear integrative approach– plus two further research methods modules.
Your core modules will review key theory in Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology. You will also examine the scope and remit of these two fields of operation, and how they can overlap.
When you graduate from this course you will operate as a more flexible consultant or practitioner in a rapidly developing and increasingly sought-after field.
You will be well versed in relevant scientific literature, with the confidence to apply it in your professional practice.
This may involve working with individuals on a one-to-one basis through Positive Psychology or Executive Coaching or working at organisational level using positive organisational scholarship.
There is a significant demand for the skills that this integrated course develops. The field of Coaching, for instance, is growing dramatically judging by the amount of research output and the degree of recognition it is now receiving from employers as well as educational and governmental institutions. According to the International Coach Federation (ICF), by 2017, the coaching industry was believed to be a $2 billion global industry.
In designing the programme we consulted with employers in the field, industry specialists, academics in other institutions and professional bodies. Our accreditation with the EMCC reflects the professional character and the quality of the training.
There are relatively few postgraduate courses specialising in either Positive Psychology or Coaching Psychology, and none which integrates the two in the way UEL has done. The integration of Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology positions graduates in a prime position to further their professional careers in a wide range of settings.
Minimum 2.1 honours degree, preferably in Social Sciences.
We would normally expect you to have Grade 4 / C in GCSE English and Maths. All suitable applicants are required to attend an interview.
Our course is accredited at Master Practitioner level by the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC). After graduating you will be able to apply for the Foundation, Practitioner, Senior Practitioner and, eventually, Master Practitioner level according to your level of experience.
