Course programme

Year 1

UNIT 1 Psychological Approaches and Applications:

Some basic ideas from different approaches in psychology will be introduced. Students will develop an understanding of how psychological research and concepts can explain gender identity, aggression and consumer behaviour. In this unit, you will investigate the various ways in which psychologists explain human interactions and you will gain a clear insight into how and why some behaviour occurs.

UNIT 2 Conducting Psychological Research:

In this unit, students will learn about the importance of research in psychological inquiry and about the types of research that take place. Students will gain an understanding of the research process and the key methods used extensively by researchers to test theories and provide information about the ways in which people think and behave. Students will learn how to plan and conduct their own investigation.

UNIT 3 Health Psychology:

Students will learn about the psychological and behavioural processes in health, illness, and health care. This unit is concerned with understanding how psychological, behavioural, and cultural factors contribute to physical health and illness.

Year 2

One Optional Unit from the list below will be taught;

  • Criminal and Forensic Psychology
  • Introduction to Psychopathology
  • Applied Sport Psychology

Additionally, the focus will be on finishing off the unit on psychological research.

Additional information

The entry requirement for studying Psychology at degree level at University is a grade 5 in GCSE Maths and English. Scientific concepts and terminology are essential to this course. There will be a variety of trips and visits. These may include trips to the theatre to see relevant plays, observation of animal behaviour and conferences in London.
