Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care (QCF) - Level 2 Overview

A health and social care apprenticeship is a combination of on and off the job training and learning, and offers the opportunity to develop a rewarding, long-term career in a growing sector.

For employers, apprenticeships offer many benefits to businesses including offering practical solutions to the recruitment and retention of staff. They are designed by employers for employers and therefore reflect the changing needs of the sector.

This apprenticeship programme has been developed for individuals who are currently working within the health and social care sector or those wishing to gain employment within this sector. It is essential for the applicant to be in paid employment, working a minimum of 16 hours per week.

Throughout the programme one to one support will be provided from the assessor.

Employment rights and responsibilities (ERR)
ERR is delivered through a combination of induction following inductions standards, the Diploma in H&SC and the knowledge qualifications as evidenced through these qualifications.

It is expected that the learner will meet all the ERR requirements through completion of the mandatory outcomes and induction to the workplace. On applying for certification the provider is declaring that the ERR requirements have been met. The SSCs will sample evidence.

Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Entry requirements

You will need to be aged 16 years and over to apply for the apprenticeship programme.

The applicant will undertake a diagnostic assessment at level 1 for both Maths and English and a free writing exercise prior to enrolment. You will be required to achieve a score of 50% or above in both subjects to ensure a place on the apprenticeship programme.

Applicants who have already obtained GCSE maths and English grade A to E or Key Skills Level 1 will be required to provide certificate/s at the enrolment stage, which will exempt the applicants from undertaking the functional skills qualifications within the apprenticeship programme.

Start dates and fees

• 16-18: no contribution
• 19+: £500 contribution cost
• 24+: £500 contribution cost

How long is the course?

Up to 15 months, but no less than 366 days.

How will I be assessed?

You are required to produce a portfolio of evidence on our online e-portfolio, which will contain a variety of assessments covering the criteria stipulated by the awarding body to cover the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care and Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care.

Assessments may include:

• Observations held in the working environment
• Reflective accounts
• Witness statements
• Activity based work books
• Work products

Assessments will be planned with an assessor prior to the assessment taking place.
You will be required to complete an online test for both functional skills elements

What does the course lead to?

The course supports progression onto other related courses, including:

• Level 3 Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care (Adults) (You would be required to be in a supervisory role).
• Other care-related short courses.
• This course also complements others available at Vision West Nottinghamshire College, listed in the adult course guide and online.
