Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for candidates who are employed in the automotive sector and want to achieve a recognised qualification.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You should have four GCSEs at Grade D or above including English, Maths and Science or a relevant Level 1 qualification and be employed in the industry.

What will I study on the course?

This course is offered in both light vehicle and HGV. You will learn routine maintenance and basic repairs, as well as identifying and reporting faults. Ideal if you are employed in the motor industry and want to achieve a recognised qualification.

How is the course organised

The course is run on a day release basis. You will attend college one day per week and spend the remainder of the week at your Motor Vehicle work placement. This course is delivered in classrooms and well equipped workshops by our very experienced staff.

How will my progress be assessed?

You will be continually assessed throughout your training. Progress will be assessed via a number of observed practical tasks in the student workplace, college workshop, witness testimony and verbal questioning of essential knowledge. In addition, underpinning knowledge will be assessed via a number of simple multiple choice online assessments.

Can I gain any extra qualifications while on the course?

You are required to complete all components of the Apprenticeship framework before studying any courses outside of the framework. The engineering department offers evening classes in areas such as Computer Aided Drawing, Welding and Electrical.

What final qualification will I get if I am successful?

Next Steps

After successful completion you will be able to progress to a range of further education and professional body awards. For example, Advanced Apprenticeship in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance Level 3, City & Guilds level 3 automotive qualifications and equivalents offered by other awarding bodies or Institute of Leadership & Management Level 2 or 3 Team Leader Qualifications.

Can I receive any financial support whilst I am studying?

Many of our learners study for free with a "Fee Waiver" when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18. If you are not entitled to a "Fee Waiver" you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 23 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 you will be able to apply for a 24+ Loan that cover all of your course costs. Higher Education learners are entitled to apply for HE Loans that cover the cost of tuition. In addition, depending on your chosen course of study and individual circumstances, you may be entitled to a maintenance loan.

Please note, from September 2016, anyone over 19 years of age can apply for a loan to cover all course fees for qualifying courses.

All learners can also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.

Please note for full cost courses funding may not be available.
