The archaeologist is a qualified professional in one of the branches of archeology, that is the vast discipline that studies the civilizations and human cultures of the past and their relationships with the surrounding environment, through the collection, documentation and analysis of material traces they have left: architecture, artifacts, biological and human remains. The professional qualification of archaeologist is not regulated in Italy today by any normative text, neither as regards its training profile nor as regards the exercise of the profession. His training traditionally took place within the degree courses in Classics, preferably thanks to the achievement of the specialization diploma in Archeology, but today after a substantial evolution of the curriculum of studies, special courses of study have been set up at degree level in Cultural Heritage (class L-1) or in Classical Literature (class L-10) and master's degree in Archeology (class LM 2). This training can be integrated by a two-year specialization school (heir to the old three-year school) or by the achievement of the title of PhD in Ancient Sciences. The evolution of training reflects the different professional position of the archaeologist today: from a scholar of the past he has become in effect a professional at the service of the territory who is responsible for providing, both at the design level and at the level of execution of works excavation, the solutions suitable for carrying out the works in the area in compliance with the protection laws, under the control of the Archaeological Heritage Superintendencies but in an autonomous regime as on behalf of the contracting stations or construction companies. Its task is therefore to ensure the correct execution of the archaeological excavation works and, upstream of the design process, to provide a reliable assessment of the archaeological risk that allows the activation of the necessary protection and protection measures.
