Archaeology is the study of human societies – from prehistory to the recent past. It is a meeting ground for different ways of thinking about the past through the analysis and interpretation of the material remains, such as artefacts, monuments and buildings.

About this course


The course aims to enable understudies to: Present relevant arguments in presentations, essays and examinations, supported with evidence.

Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the development and current practice of archaeology, as well as an understanding of different types of archaeological evidence and how they may be investigated.

Show awareness that archaeology may be interpreted in different ways.

Demonstrate a mastery of basic study skills, particularly the ability to follow a course of reading, make effective notes, and benefit from seminar discussions.


These wide ranging skills can be applied to a great variety of careers which means that history and archaeology graduates are faced with a broad spectrum of job opportunities, arising both directly from their studies, or as a foundation for careers in other fields for which a degree in history or archaeology is particularly useful. Examples include:

Researchers and writers for television, radio and film
Journalism and publishing
Teaching in primary, secondary and higher education

Course programme

What will you study on this course? If you choose to follow the four year MArts degree, the first and second years are the same as for the BA degree; however, you do not undertake the dissertation in the third year and instead choose more optional modules and/or a research project. Year 1 Many of the modules followed in the first year are introductory, with the core modules providing a broad foundation in the subject. Compulsory modules: Archaeology: An Introduction to Archaeological Principles and Techniques Introduction to British Prehistory Introduction to Historic Archaeology; Roman and Medieval Britain Introduction to History and Heritage Optional modules: Other modules offered by the School of History, Welsh History and Archaeology include: War, Society and the Media; Wales – Princes to Tudors; Apocalypse Then, the Crisis of the 14th Century. Years 2 Compulsory modules: Rethinking Archaeology: theory and interpretation Workplace module (archaeological excavation, unit or museum) Patterns of the Past Otherwise you choose from a great variety of options in archaeology reflecting staff research, which include modules on prehistory, Roman and early medieval archaeology, including modules on Wales and Ireland. Heritage modules are also available. Year 3 Compulsory modules: Field Archaeology in Britain Patterns of the Past (if not taken in Year 2) You also choose from a range of modules including prehistoric Britain and Europe, Viking archaeology, landscape and environment archaeology contemporary archaeology and experimental archaeology. You will also complete a dissertation – a research project on an archaeological topic of your choosing and of particular interest to you.
