OVERVIEW
Why study Architecture at Bath?
The discipline of architecture operates at the intersection between human beings and their environments. The architect therefore plays a vital role in shaping and sustaining our everyday experiences, our comfort and well-being, our delight in the grand vision and our appreciation of simple pleasures. A deep understanding of the subtle forces that shape architectural design is therefore essential for any practising architect.
- Courses are organised on a thin sandwich basis allowing students to immerse themselves in both the practical as well as theoretical aspects of design.
- Interdisciplinary team working on projects with students from Civil Engineering programme.
- Excellent graduate employment record.
- Research strengths in the Department include architectural history and theory, lightweight structures, computer-aided design and the environmental design of buildings.
DETAILS
Subject Aims
The Department was founded on the ethos of providing students with the opportunity to develop holistic design skills through integrating the artistic and technical domains.
Teaching and Learning
Bath's undergraduate programme in General Architectural Studies offers a structure of architectural education unique among UK Universities.
- Thin-sandwich course offering students an opportunity to combine academic study with a Placement in Practice.
- Full-time first year followed by placements in the second semester of each of the second and the third year.
- Opportunity to acquire work place skills prior to graduation.
- Core syllabus taught in years 2 and 4 of the programme.
- The third year includes a European exchange option, known as Erasmus. This gives students at Bath the opportunity to study at several of Europe's leading Schools of Architecture.
- Joint projects where teams of architectural and engineering students work together to produce highly integrated, inventive and imaginative design solutions.
Methods of Assessment
All degree programmes contain a suitable assessment mix of examinations, project work and course work.
Placements
The placements at Bath occur in Semester 2 of the second and third years of the BSc programme. Many students chose to extend their placement over the vacation period which allows them to make full use of the summer to gain practical architectural experience in paid employment. The University has a Professional Studies Advisor who helps prepare students for placement and is able to provide student support during the placement periods.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A-levels
Typical Offer: AAA
- General Studies and Critical Thinking are not accepted and languages which are intended for non-native speakers are not normally acceptable when taken by native speakers of that language.
- GCSE or equivalent: An A grade in Mathematics if not offered at AS or A2 level.
- AS: Not normally included in offer. However, AS level grades are taken as indication of A2 performance in conjunction with predicted grades. Candidates are required to indicate their AS grades (not UMS score) in the application even if they are not being certificated. Where the application does not contain this information clearly, decisions may be delayed or even eventually rejected. Applicants should contact their school to ensure this information is made available to us as early as possible.
- In order to remain fair to all candidates, we only consider grades obtained at the first attempt of any given examination (at unit level, although performance within modules are also considered carefully). Therefore candidates re-sitting any of their GCSE, A-level (or equivalent) exams will not normally be considered.
- No portfolio is required for entry to the programme.
No particular subject combination at A-Level (or equivalent) is required for the BSc although we encourage applicants offering a balance between the humanities and the sciences. The following is a list of A-levels considered 'less effective preparation' for our course. Candidates offering one of these subjects will usually offer at least two of the more traditional subjects to be successful. This list is not exhaustive and is only included for guidance:
- Accounting
- Business Studies
- Communication Studies
- Dance
- Drama / Theatre Studies
- Film Studies
- Health and Social Care
- Home Economics
- Home & Community Studies
- Information and Communication Technology
- Leisure Studies
- Media Studies
- Music Technology
- Musical Appreciation
- Performance Studies
- Performing Arts
- Photography
- Physical Education
- Sports Studies
- Travel and Tourism
Since not all applicants will be able to take more than 3 A-levels at their school, we will consider only the 3 best subjects for such applications that offer more than 3 subjects.
In order to remain fair to all candidates, we only consider grades obtained at the first attempt of any given examination (at unit level although performance within modules are also considered carefully). Therefore candidates re-sitting any of their GCSE, A-level (AS/A2 or equivalent) exams will not normally be considered unless there are exceptional circumstances. In such cases, the candidates should declare their achieved grades in the 'qualifications completed or certificated' part of the form in addition to indicating the subjects that are being re-taken in the 'not yet completed or certificated'. In all such cases, the referee statement should clearly indicate the nature of the mitigating circumstances and subjects affected.
International Baccalaureate
Typical Offer: 36 to 38 points with 6 in Mathematics, with the majority of offers at 38 points. The mathematics criterion applies to whichever level the candidate has chosen to study (i.e. SL or HL) though the majority of offers would be to candidates studying to HL.
