If you want an exciting career in art and design then here's the place to start. This one-year course prepares students for a future in the creative industries offering a range of practical disciplines within art and design including fashion, photography, graphic design, fine art and 3D crafts.
The course is delivered in two parts.
Part one allows for you to explore a range of art and design disciplines by experimenting with diverse techniques such as ceramics, sculpture, painting, drawing, digital work, photography, textile and fashion. From this you are able to identify where your skills, strengths and interests lie.
Part two encourages you to focus on one of the specialist pathways available. At this stage you will develop and enhance your creative range and practical knowledge in the area of your chosen discipline.
You will be challenged with a variety of exciting briefs which will encourage you to explore your creativity and develop your confidence in communicating ideas.
Work produced throughout the course will create a portfolio of exciting and stimulating original pieces, which can be used to secure entry to higher level courses. In addition to this, work will be exhibited through various mediums including gallery space, installations, digital portfolios and fashion shows.

About this course

Students are able to progress onto a number of higher education courses such as degree, foundation diploma or HND.
Successful students have gone on to various degree courses throughout the UK, and to also win a number of prestigious art and design competitions.

Five GCSEs grades A-C including Art and Design. Equivalent qualifications accepted, including a Merit at Level 2 Art and Design. Subject to interview and portfolio of work.

Course programme

A team of specialist staff deliver units as themed assignments throughout the year. Practical demonstrations take place, along with discussions, group work, individual work, presentations and exhibitions.

The work is assessed against a range of criteria which looks at diversity of research, development of ideas, exploration of media and techniques, analysis and evaluation of outcomes, final outcome in both 2D and 3D forms.~

Continual assessment from the team occurs throughout the year, during and after every assignment, with verbal and written feedback provided.

Students will spend approximately eighteen hours a week on the course.

Additional information

Various trips to galleries, museums and events will take place throughout the course. Where possible the college will subside the cost of these trips but students will also be required to make a contribution. Equipment: Studio fees (£75 per year) cover the following - small introductory art pack provided at the start of the course, specialist pack when student selects their pathway, upkeep of specialist equipment and contributes towards essential art and design resources. Students are expected to purchase their own sketchbooks and any additional equipment required for their studies. Printing costs: Students can buy printing credits for PCs and MACs as and when needed during the year.
