Who is this course for? Those wishing to study art, craft and design at level 3 and who are seeking to pursue careers for which an arts training is relevant. These might include Advertising, Graphic Design, 3D Design (spatial, product, sets/props), Fashion, Design Crafts, Textile Design, Photography and Fine Art (painting, printmaking, sculpture). Most students use this course as a means of progressing to university, however, it may also be suitable for those who have an aptitude and interest in the arts but who do not intend to study at a higher level nor carry it on as a career. This is a full-time two year course with a qualification equivalence of three full A levels.
Previous knowledge required: You will generally need four appropriate GCSE passes at Grade C or above (one in an art related subject) OR a First Diploma Art & Design or Level 2 Intermediate qualification with a satisfactory grade. Mature students may be accepted according to experience and ability. All students will be expected to present a small portfolio of work at their interview.
What will I study? The main purpose of the course is to develop your ability to appreciate the visual world and to respond in a personal and creative way. Skills that you will develop include knowledge of materials, practices and technologies in various areas including Fine Art, 3D Design, Fashion & Textiles, Photography, Design Crafts and Graphic Design. You will also develop your imagination and creative powers as well as your skills of analysis and evaluation. You will learn specialist vocabulary and a knowledge and understanding of historical and contemporary artists, craftspeople and designers.
What else will I do? All students receive tuition in Key Skills, which are integrated into the programme. It may be possible for students to undertake a GCSE in Maths or English.
How will I be assessed? Through practical project work, sketchbooks and assignments. Written and verbal feedback is given frequently on how to improve your work.
What will I achieve? BTEC National Diploma in Art & Design, with an opportunity to study extra units. Key Skills in Communication and Wider Key Skills may also be available, as are OCN units in Induction, Careers and Work Experience.
What can I do afterwards? Students often progress directly to university, Foundation Studies in Art & Design at Coleg Powys, or are directly employed in art & design businesses locally.
Materials required: Basic materials and equipment are supplied, but students will need a selection of their own media and materials. A list will be supplied before the course starts.
Additional information about this course: You will have the opportunity to visit galleries, museums locally and further afield, including Manchester, Liverpool and Cardiff. There will be input from professional artists and designers and you will be able to take part in live projects and work placements.
