About this course

You will need to give one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance in your last place of study or work. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required. You will need an additional two GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, plus one A level in art and design or a suitable art-based extended diploma plus portfolio.



Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

Course programme

Year 1

The course is an informative, challenging, and enjoyable year during which you will be able to experience new creative ideas and work processes, engage with students and tutors and make successful progress to your chosen degree or career destination. It will also be a period of intensive, rapid study with emphasis placed on your capacity for critical analytical thinking, research, experimentation, and the capacity to respond positively to constructive critical appraisal of work. You will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of disciplines, including painting and drawing; life studies; 3D studies in sculpture; design; textiles; printmaking; graphic communications; time-based media; and contextual studies. The foundation diploma allows you to choose your specialist area with a view towards higher education.

Additional information

All units are assessed through practical assignments. You will receive formative assessments and feedback that will inform you of the grade you are working towards. We will set targets that inform you how to improve. There are no examinations or external assessments on this course.
